11:00 AM - Let No (Wo)man Put Asunder Researching Ancestors Who Divorce

In the ideal world, marriages last "until death do us part." But in the real world, divorces did occur. How can you determine if an ancestor's marriage was dissolved? Explore the types of documents that give evidence that a divorce took place: vital records, censuses, resources at commercial and free websites, court documents, newspaper stories, etc. The speaker's great-aunt Jeanette, who was married at least 3 times, and engaged in just a tad of bigamy, will provide a case study.

12:30 PM - Sticking to the Union: Using Labor Union Documents for Genealogical Research

If any of your ancestors worked in the steel industry, in a mine, in the needle trades, as a cigar maker, or in other industries, they may have been members of a labor union. Labor union documents are underutilized resources for genealogical research, perhaps because they don't tend to be digitized and online. This presentation will cover a brief history of labor unions in the US, why union records are genealogically valuable, what types of union records may exist (including union membership lists, meeting minutes of union locals, newspapers, personal memorabilia, photos, etc.) and where to find them, and challenges in working with union documents, including writing source citations.
